The Neuron

ARCH 2021 - UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

Located in the heart of Charlottesville, the Neuron is a housing development that introduces a new approach to urban living. Using a grid from triangular and hexagonal shapes, the building consists of three unit typologies that vary in size. Placed among the site like puzzle pieces on a table, the units are attached at various ends that continuously branch off on another. The unique design allows the apartment complex to establish itself as a statement of modernity in one of Virginia’s most historic cities. The structure responds to the site’s topographical decline by dividing the building into four main divisions, each with the appropriate grade of the ground plane.
